Paul Hobbs CrossBarn (Cabernet Sauvignon) Napa Valley 2013

Another new addition to RARE Italian Restaurant’s wine list recently is a Cabernet Sauvignon from CrossBarn by Paul Hobbs in Napa Valley.  Launched in 2000, CrossBarn is Paul Hobbs’ second winery – in addition to The Paul Hobbs Winery – that focuses on creating “approachably delicious wines at lower prices,” as noted on an article from The Press Democrat, a local paper covering the region where Hobbs’ wineries are located.

With a deep red color, this Cab is smooth and supple, with “rich, savory flavors that coast the mouth entirely and continuously.”  Made with night-harvested grapes in Napa Valley, this CrossBarn Cab is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot.  After 20 months of aging in French and American oak barrels, it delivers flavors or peak-ripe, plums, wild berries, thyme, clove and vanillin, as described on the CrossBarn Winery website.

Like most Cabernet’s, this pairs well with meat and aged-cheeses – we think this would pair fantastically with RARE’s Braised Beef or our house-made cheeses. Try for yourself and let us know what you think!

FUN FACT:  The name, “CrossBarn,” comes from central barn and gathering place on Paul Hobbs’ family farm in upstate New York.  Coming from a family with 10 siblings, Hobbs’ family barn was a personal landmark.
