Il vino fa buon sangue – an Italian proverb that means, Good Wine Makes Good Blood – rings true of La Spinetta winery in Italy. La Spinetta was founded in 1977 by the Rivetti family and has been in their blood ever since.
This past October, we had the pleasure of hosting Giorgio Rivetti, the leading winemaker of La Spinetta wines and the grandson of La Spinetta founder, Giuseppe “Pin” Rivetti.
Mr. Rivetti was visiting Colorado on a wine tour when someone graciously recommended the trip to visit RARE Italian Restaurant in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Known for an extensive Italian wine portfolio and impeccable steaks, RARE Italian features a variety of La Spinetta products. RARE features some of their notable wines as well as Contratto Vermouths and Bitter, which is a line of exquisite bubbles and mixers also owned by La Spinetta.
Lead Winemaker at La Spinetta Winery
Mr. Rivetti took the lead in ordering family-style for his guests. Upon reviewing the menu, he was ecstatic to see Tajarin al Ragu! Tajarin is the dish of Piedmont and typically not available in most restaurants, even in Italy.
While impressed with our fresh pasta, Mr. Rivetti also claimed the Shrimp Risotto as the best risotto he’s had in his life.
For the main course, the La Spinetta team devoured the Bistecca alla Fiorentina, the Italian version of a Porterhouse. With no disrespect to his home country, Mr. Rivetti was so enamored by RARE’s dry-aged Fiorentina, that he claimed it was better than anything in Italy! The Fiorentina pairs very well with La Spinetta’s Pin, a favorite among the owners of RARE Italian.
Of La Spinetta’s wine portfolio, RARE Italian features Biancospino, Italy’s first-ever single-vineyard Moscato wine. “La Spinetta” translates to “top of the hill,” where the winery was established in Castagnole Lanze in 1977 and a prime location for Moscato wine production. From there, the Rivetti family produced their first red wine, Barbera Ca di Pian in 1985. In 1989, the team of Rivetti brothers developed ‘Pin,’ a red blend named in honor of their father & La Spinetta founder, Giuseppe, aka “Pin.” These two founding red wines – Ca di Pian & Pin – are available within the RARE Italian wine portfolio, in addition to the Biancospino Moscato d’Asti, and more.
RARE Italian Restaurant is located in Old Town, Fort Collins.
