Piancornello Rosso Di Montalcino (Sangiovese) Tuscany 2013
We have added some new wines to our list this August and each week for Wine Wednesday we will be highlighting some of our additions. This week, we are featuring an Organic winery in Tuscany – Piancornello. This vineyard has been owned by the Pieri family since 1950, where they originally just sold fruit to other producers in the area of Montalcino, a hill town and commune in Tuscany, Italy.
It wasn’t until 1991 when the Piancornello brand released its first vintage. Here, all fruits are hand-picked and, due to the vineyard’s location, the breeze from the Mediterranean sea allows for an early harvest before rainy season. “Pian” from the name “Piancornello” “refers to the vineyard’s location on a hamlet of rocky, volcanic soil in the Orcia Valley. This warm, southwestern portion of Montalcino produces full-bodied, mineral flavored wines as results of its southern exposure, hilly slopes and alluvial soil,” as noted on the Chambers & Chambers Wine Merchants website.
FUN FACT: This wine is over 14% alcohol, and ages 60% in barrels and 40% in stainless steel vats.
Specifically, the Rosso di Montalcino is medium bodied and made with Sangiovese grapes. After 28 days of alcoholic fermentation, this ruby red has notes of red and black berry fruit, liquorice and sweet tobacco. It’s well balanced with a taste that pairs well with one of our delicious steaks or house-made cheeses.
RARE Italian Restaurant is located in Fort Collins, CO in the heart of Old Town. We are proud to offer local, fresh ingredients and are committed to seasonality. We offer the best steaks in Northern Colorado, with an extensive wine list of 60+ wines in-house.
